Aegis Monster Hunter Academy
Back in the 1980s, drilling for oil grew too extensive and too deep. Humanity started breaching ancient caverns miles below the Earth's surface. They weren't uninhabited caves either. This extensive cave network was the home of unknowable numbers of massively beasts who now regularly escaped to and rampaged across the surface.
Some of the beasts were not hostile, though. They wanted to protect the surface world, and found the best way to do so was to symbiotically bond with humans, combining the deadly power of the depths with the agile minds of humanity. People who took these creatures into their own bodies became Hosts, and they were the only hope humanity had int protecting themselves.
As most people who become hosts did so at a relatively young age, though, they still have to go to school. To learn how to control their newfound powers AND to learn how to be a productive member of society. YOU are such a Host, and YOU have been accepted in the best school in the world for Hosts:
AEGIS MONSTER HUNTER ACADEMY

Set on the Japanese coast, a few miles south of Tokyo Japan, Aegis is a marvel of modern architecture and a beacon of hope to the nation. It includes on campus housing for student, state of the art training facilities, and is practically a self contained town in and of itself. Kohaku Yuhara is just now becoming a first year student here. What adventures will the new kid have?
Possible thread hooks
- It's orientation day! Time for everyone to figure out where their classes are going to be and meet their classmates/roommates
- It's T-T-T-TIME TO DUEL! As graduates from Aegis are expected to be badass monster hunters, getting some combat experience is a must. That means it is accepted policy for students to resolve differences via public duels
- Combat training! This time it's not against each other, but against simulated monsters. How well do you work as a team?
- Class! This teacher is boring and never stops talking. Exchange whispered conversations. Pass notes. Doodle in the margins of your notebook.
- Day off! A good time to catch up on your studies/training, or to go and actually relax! Read a book! Go for a walk! Watch a movie! Go on a date!
- Or anything else you can think of.

"The Deep Ones won't wait for you to finish luuuuunch!" Keep eating or not, the uppercut is coming either way.

Students scatter as Ako's sword lands. Kohaku flings her lunch to one side while rolling to the other side. The side towards where her backpack is sitting. The backpack that has a sword strapped to it. If she can get to that maybe she'll have a fighting chance!

At least for the moment, Ako doesn't pursue as Kohaku dives away. Maybe she just wants to let her reach the sword so that they can have a more interesting fight.

It wasn't ACTUALLY slowing down time, but that's how it felt to her, as her body sang with tension and felt like it was responding to her faster than she could think. If they were going to do this, she couldn't give Ako any time to think, she had to IMMEDIATELY go on the offensive. This she did, with a series of blindingly quick slashes, each from a different angle. God forbid Ako actually catch her making predictable attacks.

"Hahaha, your unfair reflexes have gotten even better! You're finally beginning to realize your potential!" Fights with Ako usually have a lot of yelling in them.

Her attacks continued relentlessly, but there was the tiniest bit of hesitation to them. Perhaps, just perhaps, the months that had passed since last they met have let a touch of human empathy dull her blade with familial love. After all she doesn't ACTUALLY want to chop Ako's head off, does she?

"As you were a month ago, you wouldn't have even evaded the first strike. Your power has grown, my pupil!"

Kohaku stood very, very still. A single drop of sweat dribbled down her nose as her eyes crossed on the blade.
"Heh...er...thank you?"

She was FAIRLY sure Ako wouldn't attack her again for now.
"You didn't even go visit them before you came here? Where have you been?"

Now that the fight-or-die time has passed, Kohaku may notice the scar that wasn't there a month ago, starting on her right hand and extending most of the way up the arm.

...It was Ako. That only made sense. Kohaku deflated and went to collect her sword.
"Dad's starting sending out his new book to publishers. Mom had a minor breakdown the other day over noticing more gray hairs. They're both doing fine."

"They say Toyo is the strongest fighter in the school. I bet you'd like her. That's Toyo Seiryu. She's the headmistress's daughter. Has dragon hands. Breaths fire. You can't miss her."
Toyo deserved some karma comeuppance for ruining her TV.

Good job, Kohaku, you've successfully derailed Ako.

"You might have to badger her into it. She's kinda lazy."
