Back in the 1980s, drilling for oil grew too extensive and too deep. Humanity started breaching ancient caverns miles below the Earth's surface. They weren't uninhabited caves either. This extensive cave network was the home of unknowable numbers of massively beasts who now regularly escaped to and rampaged across the surface.

Some of the beasts were not hostile, though. They wanted to protect the surface world, and found the best way to do so was to symbiotically bond with humans, combining the deadly power of the depths with the agile minds of humanity. People who took these creatures into their own bodies became Hosts, and they were the only hope humanity had int protecting themselves.

As most people who become hosts did so at a relatively young age, though, they still have to go to school. To learn how to control their newfound powers AND to learn how to be a productive member of society. YOU are such a Host, and YOU have been accepted in the best school in the world for Hosts:

AEGIS MONSTER HUNTER ACADEMY


Set on the Japanese coast, a few miles south of Tokyo Japan, Aegis is a marvel of modern architecture and a beacon of hope to the nation. It includes on campus housing for student, state of the art training facilities, and is practically a self contained town in and of itself. Kohaku Yuhara is just now becoming a first year student here. What adventures will the new kid have?

Possible thread hooks
- It's orientation day! Time for everyone to figure out where their classes are going to be and meet their classmates/roommates
- It's T-T-T-TIME TO DUEL! As graduates from Aegis are expected to be badass monster hunters, getting some combat experience is a must. That means it is accepted policy for students to resolve differences via public duels
- Combat training! This time it's not against each other, but against simulated monsters. How well do you work as a team?
- Class! This teacher is boring and never stops talking. Exchange whispered conversations. Pass notes. Doodle in the margins of your notebook.
- Day off! A good time to catch up on your studies/training, or to go and actually relax! Read a book! Go for a walk! Watch a movie! Go on a date!

Ako Yuhara

[CHARACTER: Kohaku's little sister, a born warrior who has gone toe to toe with monsters despite not being a Host. She trained Kohaku in the art of combat, and then, in search of the pinnacle of human strength, wandered into the Depths, and hasn't been seen since.

Spoilers: She's coming back. I'm down for whatever kinds of canon or non-canon threads here, since Ako's gonna be absent for a lot of the early parts if we do a proper PSL.]

Hazuru Shogo

[Character: The Student Council Secretary and Kohaku's new roommate, a woman who takes her duties seriously even when no one else does. She's Host to a spirit-type symbiont that lets her manipulate time, and uses it to try and save-scum for the best diplomatic responses. Uses her powers in conjunction with a combat shotgun and sniper rifle to hunt monsters

The reality is that overuse of her ability tires her out and burns huge amounts of calories, so most moments when she isn't working are spent sleeping or eating. Her first interaction with Kohaku involved slapping them when they walked in on her changing, but she moved back in time so that she was hiding in her bed instead.

"Jane Doe"/Yasu Moto

[Character: A mysterious new transfer student! Totally a human, and seems to be bound to a Stealth-type symbiont that allows her to stretch and shapeshift her body in weird ways.

Really, though, Jane is the symbiont, and the Host is Yasu Moto, a shy girl who's willingly along for the ride. Jane is intensely curious about the human world, and formed a sort of pact with Yasu to take over her body and enroll in the academy to get closer to human society and learn as much as she can.

I'm cool with literally any sort of thread, canon or not. She'll try to be friends with everybody, so be prepared for that.]

Kohaku Yuhara

[CHARACTER: Ladies and gentlemen, I give you our protagonist. Kohaku is a 1st year at Aegis, and came here from an all boys school. However, Kohaku is a girl. It was a really weird situation, don't think about it too much. She has a boy's haircut, wears boy's clothes, and generally acts kind of boyish out of habit, so people mistake her for a boy more often then not. She kind of fine with that though, and doesn't really care one way or the other.

She is a stealth type host. Her symbiont invaded and replaced most of her nervous system, giving her superhuman reaction speeds, supercharged senses, and the ability to manually turn off her sense of pain. As Hosts go, she's not very powerful, but she is a skilled sword fighter and is clever.]

TOYO SEIRYU

[ CHARACTER: Every light novel battle series has one person who is whispered about as "the strongest fighter in school."

At Aegis, that student is Toyo Seiryu.

As the daughter of the school's founder and headmistress, great things have been expected of her. She has lived up to those expectations and more. The students gave her the moniker of "the dragon" as both a reference of her powers and of her strength in combat. And as the strongest character in school, she was the duly appointed student council president. Since appointments are carried out by combat duels, the strongest gains that title.

At least until she meets Kohaku and throws the fight against her so that she can be free of that title. Because natural ability aside, she wants nothing more than to coast through life without responsibility. That's her true character.

As her title of "the dragon" might suggest, she is a mutation type host. It's visible in her hands, which are claws with golden/red scales that run halfway down her wrists, giving her arms super strength, making them impervious to damage, and giving her razor-sharp deadly claws. Less visible, she also has the ability to breath fire. It gives her a reputation as somebody not to be crossed. ]
